Introduce Yourself!

NeedsFoodBadly
I want to introduce myself and I noticed there was no general introduction thread so I figured why not make one, since I'm honestly not that cool to have my very own thread.

So, if anyone wants to introduce or re-introduce themselves, feel free to post here.

Anyway, I'm new to Quest but not new to making and programming my own text adventures. I've been programming games as a hobby since I was about six or seven years old on a Commodore 64. I've heard of quest before and felt like a little nostalgia and thought I'd give it a try so here I am.

I'm also a big fan of old school adventure games like Sierra's Space Quest, Leisure Suit Larry, etc. I'm a big sci-fi/fantasy fan (including combined genre) and also love the comedic stuff as well.

I'm also a former DJ and I produce my own original music as well. So if anyone needs an ambient tune or two, drop me a line and I may be able to help.

I'm currently working on a text adventure called Space Madness. A typical "you awaken to..." type of adventure where you must find out what has happened to your crew, restore the ship's power before the emergency oxygen supply runs out and avoid any *other* unwelcome things that may be "lurking" on your ship.

Silver
Welcome to the forums. I'm also writing a game set in a spaceship. I'm gonna set it in 2037 then hopefully I'll have it completed by then.

OurJud
Welcome along, NFB :)

Sounds like you probably won't need much help, but just in case you do you'll find them a helpful bunch here, if a little small in numbers.

So far the biggest hurdle I had was realizing that object names were case sensitive when referencing attributes. :P

My first game is going to feature a roaming enemy, objects with random placement, a depleting oxygen level on the ship and an oxygen pack with oxygen canisters that will also deplete over time. Your main goal is to restore your ship's power before you run out of oxygen or are killed by something. It should be done sometime next week if I'm not feeling too lazy.

By the way, Red Dwarf fan here too. ;)

Silver
It does seem weird that coding is case sensitive. I write everything in lower case unless it's a print msg output.

OurJud
NeedsFoodBadly wrote:By the way, Red Dwarf fan here too. ;)

I'd guessed as much :)

Marzipan
I just wanted to say that that game idea sounds like a lot of fun, and if you can pull it all off by next week I'll have to tip my imaginary hat to you.

Between this game and OurJud's it looks like we've got some good sci-fi to look forward to right around the corner. I've got one set on a space station in the works as well...but it will probably be finished about the same time Silver's is. :D

Silver
I need to get a move on really. I got side-tracked by trying to get video to work. Then decided if that wasn't happening my game needed graphics so set about learning 3d modelling from scratch. Decided that the 3d modelling actually is secondary to finishing a game so back on track again.

Marzipan
What was supposed to be my 'tiny simple little test game' has taken me such an embarrassingly long time by now that by this point I basically feel obligated to shoehorn more content into it just so I have an excuse for all the delays. :D

Hello, my name is Jordan.

*Hi, Jordan.*

I write short stories and then make spinoffs which I turn into text games. I often take non-specific songs, paintings and digital art and turn it into a story.

*awkward slow clap*

I tend to try and make my ideas so big that they implode and I'm left with a mushroom cloud of words. I also have a thought disorder when it comes to being social. Anything longer than a few sentences at a time becomes all...schizophrenic. So I tend to work and write slower than most people just to make sure everything lines up. I think that's one reason I don't talk much in person. I'll type/text you a novel but when it's a face to face thing I tend to only open my mouth if it's to say something funny/inappropriate for the situation.

HegemonKhan
let me properly introduce myself ;)

I've been wanting to learn to code and learn game making, and found quest, I've been here for about 3 years now, slowly trying to learn to code and to make games, but it's a slow process as work takes up most of my time (I come home too exhuasted to do further work: learning to code more or work on making a game), sighs.

I'm very opinionated (though, I try not to be, wasted too much of my younger years debating online... then realizing that debating with idiots is really a big waste of time, seriously), I'm actually quite smart and am a huge nerd, loving ALL science fields, I watch tons of educational shows, news, and am interested in politics and world events (been so, ever since I turned 19, I just all of a sudden became interested in news~world events~politics, lol, when priorly, I wasn't really that interested at all). I was really good at math and science up through high school, but then I realized I really weren't interested in those as carreers (I hated doing boring 6 hr science labs, that with my clumsiness, could never do right, laughs), and math was getting too hard for me (applications of calculus, and~or I was just getting too lazy, and sick of school work, and with math... you need to do that homework... to really get it in your head for when the test comes). Took more of an interest in human behavior sciences, and I never really knew what I wanted to do for a carreer, so I really wasted a huge chunk of my life taking classes for no benefit for me for a carreer~job~future. I went into history as a major, as I had to choose some major, as I still had no idea what I wanted to do, but I learned that 'liking history, liking to read about history', is NOT the same thing as being the one to have to actually research, read, and write papers upon paper upon papers, with an abysmal prospect: be a teacher, a museum curator, or an archeologist (if you like to dig and adventure~travel), oh, or being a lawyer (but really history is just taken by lawyers to be better lawyers, not by historians, who then decide to go into law, lol). YUCK, I was hugely turned off by history as a career, hated it, and it was a total DEAD END, anyways. I did learn though to write really well though, laughs. I JUST HATE research, especially research papers, though... I love to just be able to free-write, to give my own thoughts about something, as that's really better than pretending to write an 'objective research paper', when you're really just pushing a biased political agenda upon the populace. The secret truth: people write and find 'facts', that they want to find and write about.

So... I needed to find a real carreer... and I've been frustrated with not knowing anything about computers and paying huge amounts of money to get my computer cleaned of viruses, so I'm like why not go into computers, it's a wonderful carreer, having lots of real use and can live off of too. That's all true, but there's A LOT to learn, sighs, lots of competition, and I'm at the bottom, those good jobs are still way out of my reach, but it is a carreer... hopefully, I can learn enough to get a good~decent (livable) job, at some point before its too late, sighs. I wish I was a kid again, being born as a coding~computer genius, working at google at 12 years old, making millions... but alas, that sadly wasn't me, back when I was a kid... I'm old now, so I'm trying my best to catch up to everyone else.. but there's so much to learn with computers... sighs, and in being old... I'm not learning as quickly as I could when younger, even though I am generally a quick learner, I'm noticing the age factor in learning, sighs.

anyways, I got some job now... not a livable wage (part time of course, as there is NO full time jobs in the US, thanks to Obama Care!), but a wage, and at least a foot in the door, my first job in computers... now I just need to try to find time to learn more, so I can advance and find a better job... while still working at the job I have now (as it took me 9 months to get this job... I'm uber fearful of quiting... and not being able to get another job, laughs. The US economy and job-market is abysmal in reality for us 'non-well-off' people, sighs. And fewer and fewer jobs are available too, between globalization of cheap labor in other countries losing jobs in this country, hard working smart foreigners coming here taking up the good jobs here, and illegal immigrants from mexico taking up the lower jobs here too, there's literally like NO~ZERO jobs left for US citizens in the US, sighs. All for $@%#^#$% politicians getting votes for their party and staying in their lush 'elysium' life as politicians~congressman~senators~executive administration~etc). Anyways... let's see... I love gaming (electronic and board), I did like playing sports (soccer~world football, baseball, american football~rugby with pads) when I was young, I love stories, so I love to read (well, when I was younger I read galore, but now I don't read at all), watching tv, movies, anime, manga, and etc. I love sci-fi and fantasy for genres, and I 99% of the time, HATE comedy, it's so beneath me, I'm a smart nerd, so I just can't stand comedy (99% of the time), really the only reason I watch comedy at all is merely for its fanservice scenes, laughs. What else... I'm a decent chess player, not at the professional~competitive level obviously (I can't play fast at all, lol), but I'm not bad at chess for an amatuer player.

oh... if you haven't realized by now... I like to write... write a lot... I'm the opposite of a twitter'er, I'm a verbose writer... blame that on my history classes, laughs. Concise is not in my vocabulary, laughs. (my teachers hated me, whatever paper assignment I was given, I'd always at least double the maximum page limit, 10 page assignment, I'd write at least 20 pages and I would have to make it single spaced despite it being required to be double spaced ~ hey if it was double-spaced it would be 40 pages long!, laughs... ya my teachers hated me, but they still gave me A's, lol)

I love animals (well only some, I could care less about cows, but dogs... wolfs... and etc cool animals, I love), am a huge animal nerd (remember I LOVE ALL science fields), though I don't find others to talk about animal stuff, lol. When I was little, I loved dinosaurs, loved when Jurassic Park (1) came out, was an epic movie back then, hehe.

A few books (of MANY) I've read, being mentioned briefly here: Ender series (Card), Foundation series (Asimov), Dune series (Herbert), Hobbit(+LotR) series (Tolkien), Wheel of Time series (but not finished, as I stopped reading) (Jordan), Michael Chrichton's (I can never spell his last name, lol) books, Narnia series (Lewis), other Asimov books, the adventure books (Price), Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Crime and Punishment (Dov... laughs, not even gonna try to spell it from memory), Call of the Wild (London), Never Cry Wolf (Mowatt), Outsiders (can't remember), Downriver (Hobbs, I think), Where the Red Fen Grows (forgot...being old and lazy sucks), the AVI books, Bhavidi Gida (I tried... to spell it, lol), Beowulf, Arthurian Legend series (Crystal Cave, Hollow Hills, ???~forgot its name, Wicked Day) (Mary Stewart, I think), and etc etc etc books.

I really love advanced~theoretical physics stuff (black holes and etc), (so if anyone else likes, feel free to chat with me, hehe), and other advanced science field topics too.

I've seen over 800 movies (and most of them in the theater too... that's a lot of money... they got of mine, laughs), and thus this is no-where close to a complete list (it would take way too long), here's just a few of the movies that I thought were good and~or better (+great+epic):

my genres: Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Martial Arts, Fanservice (laughs, I am a guy)
hated genre: comedy

Underworld (1), RE (1+2), Aeon Flux, Butterfly Effect (1, didn't know they made more, I need to see the others, lol), (new) Batman Trilogy, Fracture, Divergent, Hulk (year ~2000), Iron Man (1), Frozen, Matrix (all), 13th Warrior, Jurassic Park (1+2), Home Alone (1), TMNT (original, year 1980s or 1990s), Oblivion, A.I. Greetings, Quest users!

Allow me to share with you my life story.

Like many of you, I was born a human on your planet "Earth", a number of solar sweeps ago. Because I was in possession of a vagina and sexually attracted to males, for a long time I assumed I was a heterosexual woman. Then, one fateful day, I neglected to put on my hazmat suit before browsing the internet, and having reached a certain 'level' of exposure to net ions (a technical term, write it down), I suddenly came to the realization that I was actually a gay man, trapped in a woman's body! Needless to say, this was quite the revelation! It drastically changed my way of viewing the world. Not to mention adding an additional layer of special snowflake-ness that had been sorely lacking in my life up until that point.

Further research revealed that additionally, I had the soul of an albino, hermaphroditic, heterochromic giraffe, which was half were-tiger and 3/8ths vampire on hir mother's side. (And immune to mind control and fire.) The exception to this was of course on full moons, when I...that is my inner self, transform into a lesbian unicorn with a tragic past who was a space pirate in a previous life.

Oh, and also, I like interactive fiction and CYOAs or whatever.

Silver
Pics or it didn't happen.

Marzipan
Silver it's my inner self, you just have to take my word for it.

Silver
I'm a nerd (flight sim, text adventures, niche politics) trapped in the body of a hard drinking liability.

Eyyyyyyyyy

Hi. I'm new.

DANTHEMAN
hello all!

my names Gez and i'm an art student from London.

only recently started making my own games after years of 'meaning to'.
absolutely zilch coding experience, but hopefully this forum can help me out.
essentially, i'm trying to incorporate this medium into the conceptual art world. (there are a lot of contemporary art critics that still believe games are not art)

anyway hello and hi.

Silver
Quest is great for introducing you to code. You can learn the logic in the GUI editor and then peek beneath the hood to see what code it generated. I was scared witless of code six or so months ago but now I do that first and only lean on the GUI when I'm a bit unsure. Posting on the forum helped a lot too. They're a helpful bunch. And I doubt there is a question that can't be answered. Welcome.:)

HegemonKhan
I too started with ZERO coding~programming knowledge, and thanks to Quest, I've come far in these 2-3 years (well for me anyways, coming from ZERO knowledge in coding), so if you're interested in learning to code, quest is really awesome, and if not, quest is still awesome, as it got a great GUI~Editor, letting non-coders to make games (though there's still the learning curve of game making and game making's 'code~design~IF-THEN-ELSE-THEN logic' mentality needed). Silver's advancing~learning coding really fast too, though he~she may not realize it, laughs (I was a slow learner... I get jealous of how everyone else is learning to code so fast, compared to me... sighs).

riskyjoe
Hi I signed up today..I've always been interested in text adventures, game books like fighting fantasy so I'm gonna give this a go I found this site just messing about on the net I hope to write something soon and I'm open to criticism :) be gentle ..any guidance accepted thanks

Veldonos
Hey everyone, I'm Patrick, 21, and from the USA. My apologies in advance if this seems long-winded and/or if reviving an old thread is frowned upon.

While I generally don't do this sort of thing, I figured it'd be best for me to get involved with the community -- Me being a bit of a novice and all.

A bit about myself; My interest in game development started and (since then) has flourished from when I was a child. My petty attempts helped me pick up a small amount of coding knowledge regarding HTML, XHTML, CSS, Perl, and C++.

Perl was my first attempt at a text-based game heavily influenced by D&D. I was fairly enthused with what I managed to piece together, but later dropped the project since I was under the impression that the text-based gaming community had gone extinct. From there I focused my efforts with modern game development and found I had a knack for 3D modeling. As I attempted to join projects that were willing to accept fresh blood, I became quickly discouraged since so many seemed content with creating watered down copies of watered down copies.

After discovering this site, I decided to tackle the (likely impractical) challenge of bringing my own vision to life. Starting with developing a text-based version to hammer out the systems, features, story, and lore while getting constructive criticism from the community. Then going on to create a modern version of the game...I suppose like a book that eventually gets turned into a movie.

Saying all of that to say this: I'm here because I want to try creating something beautiful and I doubt I can accomplish that without some guidance from time to time.

I look forward to participating with you all, sharing what I learn, and hopefully not causing someone to rip out their hair with incessant questions.

XanMag
I started with essentially zero coding knowledge and managed to churn out a fairly decent (I hope) first game. At this point I have slightly more than zero coding knowledge. Albeit elementary, that little coding knowledge has helped tremendously in the production of my second game which is coming along much more smoothly and is a much greater project both in scale and complexity. If you have coding experience (and from the looks of it, you have much more than I), you will have very little problems using Quest to create the game you want. As stated previously in this post, if you have questions or problems, ask in the forum. The people here are really good at helping iron out the wrinkles.

Good luck and Happy Gaming!

XanMag

RobDMC
Howdy all. Super duper newbie with a love for gaming and stories here.

Looking forward to sharing my crap ideas with you all.

Peace

HegemonKhan
Welcome Rob, hope you enjoy quest, while a small community, we really help each other out. So, feel free to ask questions on anything, and don't let me scare you with my usually lazy code help, laughs, there's lots of people who can help you via through using the GUI~Editor.

Quest is great for making games, with no coding knowledge or with it, and if you want to learn to code, quest is great for that too, as I myself went from knowing absolutely nothing about coding, to where I am now (I'm still extremely noob in coding, but I've come a long ways considering starting at zero).

HeyJefferson
Hi I'm new to the forum and thought I'd introduce myself as well so Hi:)

lightwriter
Hello everyone, I'm the Light Writer but you can also call me Tyler, I never really introduced myself and thought this would be a good time to do so. Better late than never. ASs you might have guessed, I enjoy writing, fantasy to be more precise. I can say I have written a novel (over 100k words long!)

drednort
Hi - I'm Drednort... what can I say about myself? Well, among other things, I am a RPG game writer (freelance, mostly for a British games company) who, as a child in the 1980s wrote my own 'Choose Your Own Adventure' stories for fun, some of which aren't actually too bad, and I am looking to convert them to Quest. I may even do some more complicated IF type games as well at some point, but my first priority will be to redo my gamebooks.

XanMag
Glad to have you! Post questions if you have them. I look forward to testing your games!

harryharris
Hi I'm also new !

Excited to learn from you more educated ladies and gentlemen.

Basically I love all things Dragonball and Guyver. On the fence with much stuff outside of those two. I also enjoy, like everyone else, bringing my own ideas to life, but they're not too heavily influenced by manga stuff (I think). Anyway - good to be here !

MissSearle
Hey,

I'm a slight nerd of the female origin, I enjoy learning new things. I'm from England, and I currently work as a Digital Marketer.
I am a big Superman fan, but an even bigger Movie Fanatic, I love all films and everything about them.
My favorite old film would be The Breakfast Club and my favorite new film is between Scott Pilgrim and Enders Game.

I've always worked with websites ever since I was probably aged 11. But I never had time to invest fully.
I currently want to learn to code text based games mainly to own my own text based MMO (like a rpg mafia game).

If you want to get to know me, give me a PM!

HegemonKhan
@ Harryharis and Misstrace:

Welcome to our small but helpful community! :D

----------------

@ Harryharis:

I was introduced to anime by DBZ, and I liked Guyver (both old and new, though liked new better, as the old is a bit too old in terms of graphics)

---------------

@ Misstrace:

There's nothing "nerdy about nerds" !!!, nerds are the coolest most interesting people, hehe ;)

I love movies too, I've seen probably over 1000 movies in my life, though I've got very niche tastes.

I love RPGs too, and favorite genres are (dark) fantasy and sci-fi

I liked the action~MA (Martial Arts) in Scott Pilgram, and I love the Ender series, but the movie was awful... sighs.

However, I am a Batman fan, in terms of the Superman vs Batman choice.

--------------

I love to help, though don't let my code scare you away, laughs.
(I learned to code from quest, from not knowing any coding at all 2-3 years ago, when I first found quest)
(now, I'm taking programming classes, and I am amazed at how much I know from quest, hehe)

MissSearle wrote:

Hi, Harry ans MissSearle.

Not seen EG, but I do like me a good sci-fi film. I may give it a try.

OurJud
Mmm, so it looks like Enders Game is going to be a Battle Royale / Hunger Games type film.

I doubt I'll make it to the end.

HegemonKhan
you've got to read the books, OurJud, the Ender series is epic, Orson Scot Card understands humans so well, and Ender is so awesome, but the movie is just so awful, it'll give you the completely wrong opinion of the Ender series. The second book, Speakers for the Dead, shows just how awesome Ender is, and Orson Scott Card, laughs. I've read 1 or 2 more books, but haven't read all of them yet. Though, I really want to read a book on Peter, hehe ;)

Peter was the first child, but he was TOO RUTHLESS for humanity. Valentine was the second, but she was a bit too soft and merciful, and then there was the 3rd child, Andrew, or better known as, Ender. So, this is why I want a book on Peter, I want to see him let loose, I want to see just how brutal and ruthless he is, laughs.

There's nothing similar between the Hunger Games and the Ender series... it'd be offensive, if there was a comparison, but there is none. The Ender series is epic, the Hunger Games is trash.

OurJud
HegemonKhan wrote:... but the movie is just so awful...

Yes, HK, I lasted about 20 minutes, if that.

Currently reading The Hobbit which I'm loving. Can't wait to get stuck into the three LotR books!

I can't say I've encountered any of this heavy, obsessive attention to detail that Tolkien gets accused of so often. It's been a surprisingly easy read so far. Maybe he saved all the heavy stuff for LotR.
